May 1 1796

My very dear & good Bard

I am glad to hear that the spurs & my note arrived safe at Eartham, & I will begin this Epistle with by giving you an account of the success I met with in executing the commissions you gave me – the first thing after breakfast on Tuesday Morning, I went to Paines, & lo Evans told me that there was not a Copy of the Life of Lorenzo to be obtaind [sic] for love or money! but that there would be another edition publishd in about a month or six weeks times, so that Miss Poole must be patient for a little time while – from Paynes I crossd the Park to Mr Cratchrodes, whom I luckily found at home; He told me that he thought the Oxford Gentlemen would not put up any Monument to Sir W. m Jones & for a very good reason viz: because they are not

rich enough, but if he does happen to hear of anything either for Sir W.m Jones or any one else, he will not fail to let you know of it.. from thence I went to Edwards in Pall Mall, to thank him for the two prints he sent you, which I did, & he with numberless bows &c, said you was extremely welcome, & that you did him a great deal of honor to accept them, & so forth! from there I went again to call on Mr Guy, to ask of him as Mr Flaxman desired me, to fix some time to come & see us in Buckingham Street, but He said that it was impossible for him to fix any time, for it was so uncertain when Mrs Barwell might want his assistance, that He could not leave the House for any time, but as he said that he wishd [sic] very much to see Mr Romney & his pictures, I persuaded him to go with me to cavendish square which he did but not without writing down where he was that they might send for him if occasion required it. \we/ found our good friend well & Mr Guy was highly delighted with the pictures —

so far I believe my dear Bard I have executed all your comissions; [sic] adam smith I will order for you soon. Now let me thank you for the very welcome news your very \kind/ letter tells me. I hope now that our dear Bard of Weston is in a fair way to a speedy recovery & my friend James Webber to make an illustrious man in the world. I shall think myself highly honord [sic] to have my sketch of Pamela travel under the care of so great a personage as Mr James Webber! —

[page 3]

Having thus far spoken for myself, give me leave now to ask you a question for Mr Flaxman senior. A gentleman went the other day into his shop, & bespoke two casts of the Bust that Mr Flaxman made of you some time ago, & \my/ a Medallion of Mr Romney. Now this Gentleman only left his Name, which is Mr Smith, & Mr Flaxman does not know where to find him, I have called at Mr Romneys, & he says he knows not who it can be, & Mr F. would be much obliged to you for any information you could give him.. he said he was an old acquaintance of yours, & he is a \tall/ handsome young man – I must now bid you adieu for to day as Mr Flaxman will add a postscript & I will add a line or two on the first page tomorrow. with love to all beleive [sic] me ever your most affectionate. T Hayley—

Dear and Kind Friend

I thank \you/ most cordially for the pains you was att, [sic] to serve me, concerning the latter Monument of S:r W:m Jones, for I assure you I feel the same satisfaction and gratitude for all your endeavours to serve, me as for those in which I have profited by Your Success, well knowing, that there never was a more zealous friend, and certainly if any labour, any sacrifice on your part would obtain the End, your friends would always be as sure of the advantage as they are of Your good wishes but I am ashamed when I think of the pains and expence which the former Monument cost you, at present I cannot think of the Services you would, but of those only which you have rendered, and for them I will endeavour not to be ungrateful; besides my Dear Friend I ought to be well contented with what I have, and rejoice in the prosperity of others; Thomas is well and diligent, the Bust of Minerva I hope will be finished to welcome your next Visit during the Exhibition — pray remember me kindly to Mary — God keep you in constant health & happiness – I have the honor to remain

Dear Sir your Affectionate & obliged

J Flaxman
